How to Destroy Microsoft www5.zdnet.com

Sorry guys, the headline wasn't my idea. Of course, I couldn't leave one like that pass either. I'll just leave you with just the first.

1. Anti-Microsoft consumer movement. The biggest threat of all. Never underestimate Ralph Nader. This pro-consumer pit bull single-handedly turned the American public against the formerly revered General Motors. The "Microsoft can't be trusted" mantra already permeates the tech industry. Only Microsoft's bottomless marketing budget has allowed Bill Gates to maintain his charming nerd-next-door image with mainstream consumers. But such celebrity is fragile. Witness Donald Trump. One day he was an entrepreneurial idol. Then he stepped over the line. Overnight he became reviled as an arrogant cheat. Nader is just the man who could manipulate public opinion to push Microsoft over this same "they've finally gone too far" line.

Well, I don't think Ralph Nader single handedly turned the US consumer against the General, there was the little matter of all the crappy cars GM built in the '80s, and old Roger Smith. I have no idea what the public thinks of Bill Gates, Fred Moody says he preaches humility but that's at odds with anything I've ever heard or seen. But the hearts and minds thing doesn't look good these days. Thing is, letting the general public loose on Windows 95 may be a bit counterproductive, the integrity and uniformity of the experience notwithstanding, but who's to say?

Cheers, Dan.
