The south was solid Democratic as long as there's been a Democratic party.

And the south didn't begin switching in 1964 or over civil rights. The Republican party was the party of civil rights.

There's a reason Democrats kept putting southern Democrats on their Presidential tickets .... they've needed a southern Democrat on the ticket to win. Obama's the first Democrat to win the Presidency without being from the south or having a southern Veep.

McGovern was a major factor imo. He alienated not only white southerners but a lot of northern white ethnic voters .... I'd say he really hurt his party and took it permanently to the left. After McGovern they could only win the Presidency with a southern Presidential candidate who sold themselves as a moderate to conservative. Obama will end up doing as much harm to his party as McGovern I think.
