>>what is the difference between operating earnings and GAAP earnings <<

Operating earnings typically exclude items (normally non –recurring) that are not part of a company’s normal operations. GAAP earnings include everything. The issue with operating earnings is that management can exclude non-recurring items at their own discretion, even if analysts believe the items should be included. You get the drift.
