UMC Foresees Wafer OEM Demand Remaining Strong

Chairman of Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corp. --Tsao Hsing-cheng predicted demand for wafer OEM services will grow sharply at 40-50 percent in earnings in 1998, with the increase in consumer demand for cheaper DRAMs and cheaper high-end, high-performance PCs. He indicated that even though the DRAM market remains bearish in 1997, OEM wafer makers already are having trouble keeping up with the high demand for these products. Intel (INTC)'s decision to cut the price of its processors is expected to boost demand for PCs, as well as consumers' interest in upgrading their computers. In addition, the wide variety of new ICs with new functions will also increase demand for wafer OEM services, as these ICs will be produced in wafer foundry plants. (11/12/97)
