U S WEST Signs Contract With Next Level Communications for Deployment of NLC's NLevel3 Switched Digital Access System CHICAGO, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- U S WEST Communications announced today that it has signed a contract with Next Level Communications (NLC), a wholly owned subsidiary of NextLevel Systems, Inc. (NYSE:NLV) to deploy NLC's NLevel3 Switched Digital Access (SDA) System and related products. U S WEST has committed to purchase a minimum of 450,000 broadband xDSL access lines and Residential Gateways. Financial terms were not disclosed.
U S WEST will deploy the ATM-based NLevel3 SDA System as a unified access platform to support both FTTC (fiber-to-the-curb) and twisted-pair network topologies. U S WEST will use the NLevel3 System's BDT (Broadband Digital Terminal) in its central offices.
The BDT will connect to the NLevel3 System's Digital Loop Carrier (DLC) Universal Service Access Multiplexer (USAM), which supports 96 POTS or special service lines as well as ISDN, and xDSL plug-ins to transport high bandwidth over standard twisted pair.
U S WEST will also use the BDT to connect to NLevel3 System's BNUs (Broadband Network Units) that support 8 to 16 living units for FTTC applications. U S WEST is presently installing the NLevel3 SDA system in Scottsdale, Arizona.
In addition, the U S WEST contract calls for NLC to perform system integration to include: engineering, design, installation, integration, test, and turn-up to assure a standard, sustainable full-service network.
