Curiously enough, Claud's trip this year almost exactly retraces the route he took on his vacation in 1989. If the market rallies, as it did in 1989 (as Claud's charts illustrate), links to roadmaps of the trip will be posted, and the route will become a pilgrimage of sorts during market declines. No doubt there will be those who suspect that Claud is tinkering with the market during his absences; that he's discovered some sort of vortex of market forces at his vacation retreat -- perhaps in a sacred spring or in the mouth of a volcano. Perhaps Claud vacations with Alan Greenspan, who seems to have wrapped up his affairs for now.

Claud: Forgive me for these flights of fancy. With this market, my imagination is my one remaining luxury. I've enjoyed seeing your charts comparing 1989 and 1997. You've brought some rationality -- and some hope -- to the subject.
