There is a rock formation in Isua (Greenland) that has a band of metamorphic carbon in it. It's likely that the carbon is biogenic. That implies that 3.8 billion years ago life was plentiful enough in places to form macroscopic colonies that left gross features in very old rock.

What intrigues me about this is that it suggests that life (if it didn't arrive ready-made from elsewhere) went from lava to complete cells in a few hundred million years.

Howd it do dat!
