The house does have windows imo. While we have not yet ventured into space "for real", we do have a sensory capacity that is not trivial ... especially in the radio band. We'd be able to detect ourselves from thousands of light years away.

Ours is a very young species, and it would be very unlikely that (if they exist) other technical species would be as young. It will be some time before we can move among the stars, and when we do I suspect that our travel speed will be perhaps one per cent of lightspeed. This isn't so awful if you take the long view ... only a few millennia to some excellent candidate stellar systems. But travel is not the place to start - that place is listening and perhaps conversing in the EM spectrum. So far that spectrum is a silent wilderness.

The pun-muse has forsaken me temporarily. My wand is not funny tonight (although it has been known to impress the occasional bunny).
