Catastrophe Strikes Japan

A summary of the dramatic events in Japan, including some of the most striking images we have come across over the weekend. Murphy's Law becomes operative at one of Japan's major nuclear facilities, with the outcome still uncertain. We take a brief look at the likely economic consequences of the earthquake, including the customary dispelling of the broken window fallacy. Aside from the tragic human toll, there can be no doubt that an enormous amount of wealth has been destroyed. This is irrespective of how 'GDP' reacts (likely a dip, followed by an increase as rebuilding activity and government spending kick in) - a statistic that is useless for measuring real wealth creation.
It is very suspicious that economists everywhere maintain that the tragedy in Japan will have no effect whatsoever on global economic growth. This sounds like a consensus worth fading.
A few comments on recent developments in Libya and Bahrain as well - they may have temporarily faded from the headlines, but important things continue to happen there.
