Things are indeed bad.

However, my current thinking is that it is not the end of Japan.

The reactors are encased in very sturdy vessels. I doubt very seriously that hot stuff will melt through them.

The one problem is the cooling pools, where spent rods are placed for cool down before disposal. There is clearly a problem with at least one of them. But because conditions are similar in all of the reactors, i.e., no power to allow cooling water to circulate, I think it is safe to assume that more than one of the spent fuel cooling pools are damaged. Thankfully, they are not subject to pressure.

The pool or pools seem to have lost water somehow, thus the fire and the melting and spewing.

I wish I knew how they are built. I will try to find out. If I am convinced that the pools are as sturdy as the stuff encasing the reactors, I will be buying like a maniac.

More later.

Edit: According to the NYT, "[t]he pools are a worry at the stricken reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant because at least two of the three have lost their roofs in explosions, exposing the spent fuel pools to the atmosphere."

Why these people did not secure the spent fuel in much the same way the reactors are secured is beyond me. The spent fuel is just as dangerous as the normal fuel. The pools seem to sit at the top of the reactor buildings.

Don't buy. Hunker down. I expect this will get worse.
