Its a fact that the US has passed laws to mitigate environmental damage to the extent we can.

And if barriers to US production mean that the mining happens in third world countries, than there is likely more environmental damage, since they often don't have the same level of environmental concern and protection.

Which doesn't mean I'm against free international trade in mined commodities, far from it, just that the argument that we should stop extracting resource here, in order to "be kind to the environment" often doesn't make a lot of sense, even when viewed only through the perspective of the effect on the environment.
