Instead of focusing on the problem (getting more miles out of the batteries, pushing the technology as far as possible) GM takes off on this tangent of trying to provide a gasoline-powered generator, in effect. Its somewhat similar to a diesel electric train, with the added bonus of "plug-in" operations using no fuel for short trips. Not necessarily a bad idea, except that in this car its a lot more expensive than a conventional engine.
