Not really - I think the old Japanese reactor held up rather well to the quake - but they apparently didn't plan for the tsunami. Even in CA they built their two ocean side reactors 30+ feet above sea level and built tsunami walls to protect them. Can't say the same for other forms of energy supply that could not even stand an earthquake like windmills or solar.

So far the death toll in Japan breaks down like this:

Earthquake: Hundreds
Tsunami: Thousands
Radiation: Zero

With the current evacuations the likelihood of radiation related deaths is about zero. The fear is real but overblown compared to the real threat of freezing to death every night without power.
