dwight, your recommendation to avoid the open at any cost is excellent advice.

especially in these volital markets! my experience is that if one really wants to take a position, then sometime around noon lets the market discount almost all of the issue-specific incormation. there are still risks from moves in industry associated stocks. but it is impossible to squeze all of the variation out.

use of limit orders is both lazy and risky. one certainly should not want one's intentions exposed for any longer than necessary. you can get zapped by a bad spread or worse miss the market totally if it moves too fast for you. either in or out! a limit is 'sort of' - not the best kind of mindset for decision making.

in the long run (on average) the market order, properly timed within the day, will win you some and lose you some. they wash and the results will reflect your judgement to maximum degree!
