The corporate image can go to further extremes than that: executives services can be found that will discretely provide assistance by creating a team of executive coaches who not just help shape the open image but also help develop presentations, draft talks/speeches, appraise communications for impact, and advise on relationships within and outside the company .. or whatever else the executive will think can give him an edge. Outside advisors and coaching isn't at all unusual except that this is done discretely.

Corporate image has grown in importance over a period of decades: isn't this simply and extension of brand and product image through clever or deceptive advertising that is common? Does anyone expect to get the girl/man when the ink is dry on the new car contract?

Of course this is not the same thing.. but its easy to see the motivation. The ethics of business has become 'do anything you can get away with or blame on others'.

I think its unlikely that Congress will pass a law making this abuse illegal. Some in government would probably consider it but then how would it be enforced effectively? I think it would become like the 'no call list' that is supposed to protect against unsolicited calling: it seemed to work for a while but now goes ignored. When I tell callers "I'm on the no call list, you are violating the law" .. the person often says they will remove my number from their database.. again. They apparently don't comply because they figured out there is no enforcement. Congress is now all about cutting back government, not doing things that micro-manage the wild west of the Internet or phone communications.

A possible counter to this is, if the public cares, the rise of watch-dog sites and services. The same software and open dev services that tract spammers on web site member sign-ups and boards could be put to use to tract multiple posts from image 'consultants' and BOTs.

Another avenue is Internet sales and public advocacy sites that build reputation ratings that can include a truth in posting rating if so demanded by the public.

My area of interest is wireless broadband and ICT. The suppliers and operators make various claims about technology, bandwidth, coverage, often comparing their offering to competitors. Its now possible to do surveys using device and HTML 5 web based apps of detailed parameters of call quality and network performance. This information is becoming available using Google and other mapping so that users can see fairly accurate details of performance where they are located and travel. The caveat is that the public has to use the usually free public service.
