Hi Rob - Probably very few harbor any illusions about the morality of corporations. One has to wonder, though, if the time, effort and expense of astroturfing were expended doing a better job, would it be necessary to create these fraudulent virtual identities?

Re: "I think its unlikely that Congress will pass a law making this abuse illegal." Probably correct. BTW, the piece originated in the UK: The Guardian. Not that it matters.

Given the direction of the economy, one can envision a future in which the web is mainly occupied by 'bots massaging corporate images, while other 'bots busily trade trillions of HFT shares. Government 'bots spread the manufactured feelgood news via virtual people living contented virtual lives. Meanwhile the real humans sell burgers to each other. For recreation they flee to online lives and virtual realities, interacting happily with the 'bots and avatars.

They'll astroturf existence. 'Bots pass the Turing test and we all live happily ever after ;)
