Charlatans of all kinds took the place of the priests creating pseudo-science, junk science to keep the populaces in the fear that the sky was going to fall on top of their heads. Nuclear Armaggedom, Global Warming, Nuclear winter. Bolides crushing the Earth... Keep the masses on its tip toes. A disaster here. A crisis there. A study thither. It worked fine. Religions inaugurated that tool of control with the tales of wrath that would be laid upon the ignorant masses if they did not behave. The church worked together with the state keeping the populaces in control. Then we got science and we though that would make mankind rational. To no avail. The priests extracted rent from the poor masses pretending to talk to the Gods to appease them. Scientists today, extract rent from society pretending to establish truths.
