A few (random) thoughts about SSD.
I installed an SSD in January 2010 on my system that runs XP, and Windows 7. I took the necessary steps to optimize the performance with each system.
Using automated measuring, I could detect a speed improvement. Using my eyes, I couldn't get beyond thinking I was experiencing wishful thinking or the Placebo effect.
After running my system off the SSD exclusively for a time, (30 minutes) my magnetic disks would spin down. This behaviour is normal. However, when I needed to access data on one of the magnetic disks, the delay as they spun up was really annoying.
Coupling an imperceivable gain and a irritating loss tipped the scale toward removing the SSD.
Note: I used a desktop system for my evaluation. If I'd used my laptop, all data would be on the SSD, battery life would've played a big part in my evaluation, and the SSD's silent operation and shock resistance may have made it a keeper.
As well, SSD disks are much better today. With more capacity. And lower prices.

P.S. If anyone wishes to try a RAM disk, I'd suggest getting the Gavotte RAM disk. It allocates the memory it needs BEFORE Windows loads. This means that those who have 32-Bit systems with more than 3.2GB of memory, the RAM disk will use the memory Windows would waste otherwise.
There are many links to the Gavotte RAM disk, but not all lead to the correct version. In fact, most don't!

So far, I'm adjusting to it. I've "customized" it to look like what I'm used to. As yet, I haven't benefitted from it's new capabilities. For now, I'm happy if it doesn't bring grief. |
