Larry,
<Intel cuts its Pentium II chips in order speed up the market's
acceptance of them> - Intel has trouble selling its Pentium II.

I don't think Intel's Pentium II sales are well at the moment and the near future. The best sales of Intel CPUs which are based on Ingram Micro's(the biggest whole sale distributor in the State - 96 revenues:$12 billion)invoices from July through August of 1997 are:
1. The desktops: Pentium 133, Pentium 166, Pentium 166 MMX and
Pentium 200 MMX.
2. The PC servers: Pentium 166(CPQ and IBM models).

If we look at the items 1 and 2, the PC servers are so close to the
desktops at the speed of CPUs. If we look at most of the corporate
PC servers using Pentium 166, how can we expect corporates to use
Pentium II 233 or above P II 233 for workstations? One PC server(or more than one PC server for backup purpose) supports many PC workstations for different purposes. Normally, PC server's speed should be faster or equal to workstations' speed. If any one tries to sell P II models, the most of corporate customers will ask, "What do I gain if I buy P II?" So far, I don't see a lot of corporations are going to upgrade their PC to P II models. IMHO, the major cash cow of Intel are from Pentium 166 and 200 CPUs at the moment, not from Pentium II CPUs. If we look at the prices of Pentium 166($112.00) and 200($213.00), I don't think Intel's next few qtrs earnings will be well.

Best wishes

James
