SAN DIEGO (Dow Jones)--Ligand Pharmaceuticals Inc. (LGND) said results from preclinical studies indicate that Targretin, one of its retinoid therapeutics, may be useful in treating human type II diabetes and in treating or preventing breast cancer. In a press release, the company said Targretin was compared to treatment with a thiazolidinedione, a member of a new class of investigational antidiabetes drugs, and a control group. Animals were treated daily with three doses for 14 consecutive days. Targretin decreased the levels of blood glucose by 40%, triglycerides by 30% and insulin by 20%, at the termination of the study, Ligand said. In a rat model of mammary carcinoma, Targretin reduced incidence and tumor frequency at least as well as tamoxifen, without the undesirable reduction in mean body weight produced by tamoxifen, the company siad. Targretin treatment was compared to treatment with tamoxifen and a control group. Palpation measurement from week five through week 12 of the study indicated that animals treated with Targretin had a 90% reduction in breast tumor incidence versus controls. Tamoxifen reduced tumor incidence by up to 85%, the company said. Ligand Pharmaceuticals applies gene transcription technology to the discovery and development of small molecule drugs.
