With all of the growing negativity and pessimism in the world, coupled with the dire predicaments of many (most?) nations, including the United States, we could wake up any morning now to find that the bough has broken, reality has set in, and the equity markets have plunged to suddenly reflect the new realities of the world we live in. Who knows what the specific catalyst will be, but something terrible is almost certain to happen. Some or many nations (and perhaps some U.S. states) are likely to default on their bond obligations.

Conventional wisdom suggests that the risk of equities breaking to the upside is miniscule compared to the enormous downside risk.
