Until about age 50, most people are better off investing most of their disposable time into their work skills/career instead of into investing. After that, there's a tipping point where their portfolio is sufficiently large that a marginal improvement over average market returns will offset what marginal impact they might have gotten from work income. This is pretty simple to model in Excel and I used it with my kids to show where their focus should be coming out of school. However, I did encourage them to do a little investing in the market now so when the time comes they've seen a variety of ups/downs/bubbles with minimal exposure.
