Back in the '70s 10% ethanol was started where I live. A piston engine doesn't burn 100% of the gas that goes thru it so alcohol was added. That caused 60% of the unburned gas to be burned cutting down raw gas fumes in the air. It also raised the octane level and got the lead out of the air that had been used to up the octane. That lead was causing health and mental problems in children. Downside was the lead was also a lubricant.

Since I'm talking '70s we had a problem called gas line freeze. We bought cans of ethanol to stop it. If you didn't, the water that had condensed in the gas froze and you drove until the gas in the float bowl was gone and then you got towed in and thawed out with ethanol being added to absorb the water.

I can see a problem when gas is over 10% ethanol, the tipping point on benefits. Now it becomes a fuel. Your off the lot vehicle may not get as good of a mileage with E15. That's a compression issue. Alcohol has as much energy as gas BUT NEEDS A HIGHER COMPRESSION RATIO TO GET IT. You put gas in that engine and you blow it up.

Back during WWII many farm tractors ran on straight ethanol to save oil for the war effort. Most of the farmers were mechanics and changing the cam was no problem.

I can see one thing, back in 1900 lawyers got $,25 cents an hour and farmers got $1.99 a bushel of corn. Now farmers are ripping people off at $6.00 a bushel and lawyers are only charging $300 an hour
