An excellent Blog -- as usual. The imbalances that are so plainly evident are threatening a core meltdown of their own -- to use a current metaphor. The hardest nut to crack is the howling US debtbomb -- and it is really ticking louder by the day. All the other factors point to the debtbomb being in an increasingly volatile position.

The US has itself to blame for much of this -- and here I am speaking of the debtbomb. Americans are by nature not exactly a cohesive bunch, and when it comes to working together to do things -- fairly simple things like finance a simple list of public goods -- Americans cling tho their god-given right to own a gun and fight to the death to avoid giving 'their money' to 'the government'. With the quality of government in America how can I blame them? But the dirty truth is that America can actually afford good schools, and good police, and good health care. But Americans cannot bring themselves together long enough to deliver this outcome. On the contrary, Americans prefer to howl about taxes and government spending.

When the history of America in this century is written, it will be noted that America did not fail to succeed because it lacked for anything -- save one thing: Americans can't come together as a cohesive society, sort out their priorities and pay their bills.

China -- and what a mess that place is, no question -- at least has the common sense to sort out its priorities, fund them and move forward. It is a rotten system, but given that they are going to be the last man standing, it shows by contrast how pathetic we have become. You see it on the US news, US politics, US economics -- it is everywhere around you. One in four American adults has a criminal record. Over a third of our children don't even finish high school. We can't even find a way to provide basic medical care to children. And yet we vainly stand proud with empty boasts of being 'the best'.

We had choices -- we made bad ones. We had time -- we wasted it. We had money -- we pissed it away on frivolous self-indulgence. Hang on to your money America -- let them pry it from your cold dead hand. Its yours -- all yours. The dying cities, the prisons, the destitute children and the starving elderly -- rock on America. You are the envy of the world.
