Far from taking corn out of the global food supply the distillation process yields a protein-rich grain byproduct that's being used to feed livestock.

The deficit I am talking is the US imports too much and exports too less.

Thus exporting lots of corn is good.

The US is transforming itself on a ag export juggernaut. Exporting corn to pay for Chinese high tech goods.

The rise in corn exports continues despite the fact that maize is proving to be a viable alternative energy source for crude oil, a commodity on which the U.S. economy has become over-dependent.

The analysis below lists the countries that imported the most corn from the U.S. in 2007.

Plants mothballed during the economic downturn are reopening. Domestic ethanol production hit record levels last year, topping 13.2 billion gallons, according to the Renewable Fuels Assn. in Washington. Oil companies including Valero Energy Corp., Sunoco Inc. and Marathon Oil Corp. that snapped up facilities when the industry hit a rough patch a few years ago are looking to expand.
