Kormac, The asymptote term was used to illustrate the concept of gradual decline. The writer said oil would be "gone". Now anyone with basic knowledge of depletion curves know that is ludicrous.

Your comment about who can afford oil at various elevated prices implies that there will be nothing else.

The whole issue assumes we will only know what we know today.

If you take the concept to its rational conclusion the world we know will end shortly. I do not think you believe that.

Perhaps we could go back to the example of the slide rule to show how much things can change in a mere 40 years.

I think I am done with this and believe my point is made.

The sky is not falling! Besides - we will be broke long before we run out of oil or need the next energy.
