Can the United States really afford a major nuclear disaster at the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant? I say the United States because if New York City and the surrounding area had to be evacuated, it would really hit the whole country's economy hard.

Two faults join about a mile north of the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant. The Ramapo Fault and a newly discovered fault that runs to Stamford, CT. Columbia University scientists say that a 7.0 earthquake every 1,500 years is possible from this fault junction. Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant is only designed to withstand a 6.0 earthquake, and even that is doubtfull.

It's time to rethink nuclear. We put a man on the moon, we can move beyond nuclear power or at least replace current reactors with passively safe ones.
