Actually, Richard, your heirs don't pay the taxes. The cost basis is at time of death.

So another reason for me to hang onto blue chips with huge appreciation is that when I croak my wife or daughter gets them tax free. I won't have enough to trigger any estate taxes. And I can borrow against them any time I need the money.
