Thank you for the information. It clarifies a number of things. Here is a revised summary of what I saw.

Tivoli seems to consist of two product lines that can both belong to the category "middleware". The first is "client/server management" which includes the TME10 products. This is the part I am familiar with. This is more closely related to OLE/DB and certain related parts of Microsoft.

The second is "network management tools". These are tools to manage networks and users (backup, logins, ...). These sit on top of the network (NT, Novell, Sun/Unix/NFS, ....) and replace the tools shipped with the network (or as options). These compete by being nicer to use, or by adding features to the standard tools. I believe that a closer competitor would be UniCenter from Computer Associates.

My original point was that I did not believe that Tivoli was a competitor to Novell (or NT at the network level). I still believe that. Therefore the ownership of Tivoli would not be any barrier to IBM's interest in Novell.
