CHATSWORTH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 14, 1997--MRV's (Nasdaq:MRVC) subsidiary, NBase
Communications, announced the results of the November 1997 Data Communications magazine multilayer
switch test, which took place in the European Networking Laboratories in Paris.

Twenty-eight vendors were invited, 10 agreed to participate and only seven completed the testing. MRV's IPS
228 was the only switch to achieve zero packet loss with a maximum presented load of 600,000 packets per
second. As noted in the article, ''Even the largest conventional routers typically top out at 500,000 pps or less.''

Noam Lotan, president and chief executive officer, MRV, said: ''Latency produces unnoticeable delays in
network performance, whereas packet loss creates severe network problems. If a packet is dropped, it takes 5
to 30 seconds, depending on the application, to retransmit. This compared to a latency delay measured in
microseconds (one millionths of a second).''

MRV submitted its lowest cost DirectIP switch, a 24-port, 10BaseT with two fast Ethernet uplinks for the test.
''We chose this switch,'' stated Lotan, ''as the most cost-effective alternative to current market applications for
IP switching.''

Of the seven products that completed the test, the $4,595 IPS 228 from MRV is priced 80 percent below the
highest-priced switch ($25,980) tested, and 50 percent below the next least-expensive switch.

MRV is a leading manufacturer and marketer of high-speed network switching and fiber-optic transmission
systems that enhance the performance of existing data and telecommunications networks.

The company designs, manufactures and sells two groups of products: (i) computer-networking products,
primarily Ethernet LAN switches, hubs and related equipment; and (ii) fiber-optic components for the
transmission of voice, video and data across enterprise, telecommunications and cable-TV networks.

The company's advanced networking solutions greatly enhance the functionality of LANs by reducing network
congestion while allowing end users to preserve their legacy investments in pre-existing networks and by
providing cost-effective migration paths to next- generation technologies such as Gigabit Ethernet.

The company's fiber-optic components incorporate proprietary technology that delivers high performance under
demanding environmental conditions.
