"What I do not understand is why people buy companies that are not number one in their business. Why buy 2nd class stocks?"

Because the giants aren't growing in earnings or provide such a small return due to their high float. % of profit is a big thing to consider. if you bought csco for example, one year ago, you would have gotten in at $65 or so. If you had held, you went thru a drop from $75 to $45, then up to about $80. up 23%, same as a stock going from 13 to 16, Have you ever counted how many have done that in a week? not a year. Risk? you were down 30% on a buy/hold, hard to predict things, what if it had gone down more?

There are many ways to play the game.
