Fellow Threaders:

Just thought I would share my experience today with SynVisc which almost seemed like it was out of body. I am an anesthesiologist and our orthopedic surgeon was flying around the OR at the onset of his arthroscopic knee procedure asking for the SynVisc, did it arrive, where was it, etc. It didn't occur to me that I wasn't reading about it on this bulletin board immediately but once I woke up....

The story at this end is that "the public has been asking for it and
we decided to start using it". The twist to the story is that the majority of the insurance companies are reimbursing only $90 for the
treatment and the patient gets hit for the rest. Our hospital gets the kit(a nice triangular box with insert, questionaire booklet of commonly asked questions, and 3 pre-loaded 2cc syringes of Synvisc).
The cost to them is $500 and the orthopods have asked the hospital to
limit the markup to the patient to $100 so it costs $200 per syringe after everything is said and done. Those patients that come to surgery have the tab picked up by the carrier and get the first injection after the physician completes his arthroscope. The doc then
labels the box with a patient sticker and the meds are refrigerated back at their office and they will receive the drugs on the next two visits.
