United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon wants the massacre of almost 1,000 people – allegedly by forces loyal to pro-Muslim and U.N.-endorsed Ivory Coast leader Alassane Outtara – to be investigated, according to a report from Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.

As G2Bulletin has reported, forces backing the Muslim Outtara have been waging a civil war against forces loyal to Christian incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo.

Gbagbo refused to step down after last November's elections, charging voter fraud principally in the Muslim-controlled north.

Gbagbo ultimately was declared the winner by the country's constitutional council, but the international community, led by the U.N., the United States, France and the African Union, declared Outtara the winner, raising concern that international pressure will supersede the decisions of a country's internal legal process.

There also is concern over the rising Muslim north ousting one of the largest Christian populations in West Africa.

Because the issue had reached an impasse with Gbagbo's refusal to step down, Ouattara launched military action, saying that all diplomatic efforts had been exhausted.

Ouattara denied over the weekend that his followers were involved in the alleged massacre in the Western town of Duekoue
