Once the revolt began, the fate of the oil fields was in jeopardy. Europe decided he had to go. Why is anyone's guess?

Why guess at all. The joint statements coming out of Cameron, Sarkozy, and Obama presented a goal of humanitarian assistance, i.e. preventing the killing of the rebels. These three men were perfectly clear, so why not just take them at their word? It's the only reason for intervening militarily that makes sense because once we went against Gaddafi, the oil infrastructure of the country was put at risk.
