Thank you so much for your sharing of thoughts as well as travel plans. I'm so glad you've decided to check out that part of the world, as I can only recommend it highly. My wife and I did a week's driving holiday of our own 2 summers ago, starting from Geneva to Grenoble, then the Napoleanic Route and the wondrous Gorge du Verdun to visit friends in Monaco, and from there on to Van Gogh country at Arles and Camargue country. From there, we went on to Avignon, where we stayed at the youth hostel (EUR 30 per night for both, with breakfast included!!). The hostel as it happens is situated on the new side of ancient Avignon, and while having breakfast on the terrace, you can watch ancient Avignon start its day, with the Rhone river meandering gracefully through it. It was end-May, we were like the only occupants at the hostel, and with a secure place to park the car, it was perfect.....esp for our meagre travel budget!
One of the several 'piece(s) of resistance' was our drive the next day to nearby Chateauneuf-du-Pape country which could very possibly be very, very near where you will stay, and after a slow drive up to the highest points (where there are some, yes, Roman ruins), I hugged my wife and told her my dream: that one day, I would come here, and hug her for all the wonderful things this otherwise very cruel life has bestowed on us. We took both still and cines, and they make a most memorable souvenir of our growing old, but for sure, make time last forever.
My apologies for this OT rambler, but I couldn't resist: as for the Napoleanic route and the Gorge du Verdun, I highly recommend it, along with Van Gogh country.....and, and, and, so many other parts of France......that's why I believe, Europe will be there forever. Look out for the clear skies, esp the blue ones, you'll miss them in HK.
Best wishes for a glorious memories-filled trip, you've earned it. |
