AmSouth seen as good First Union fit-report

NEW YORK, Nov 6 (Reuters) - AmSouth Bancorp is viewed by money managers as a good takeover play amid a consolidation of U.S. regional banks, and it is seen as a good fit for First Union Corp (FTU), Business Week reported.

Banks have been making acquisitions at four to five times book value, leading one money manager to tell the magazine that AmSouth is worth up to $85 a share at five times book value.

AmSouth, which has about $18.4 billion in assets at its 275 offices, has been trading near its 52-week high of 51-5/8, closing at 51-9/16 Thursday.

First Union has assets of $140 billion and operates 1,200 offices in the eastern United States. AmSouth has 275 branches in four southern states.

First Union and AmSouth were not immediately available for comment.
