Following up Art Swift's blog comments and MIPS 8-K Friday, the WSJ has an article Friday that includes:
One who has discussed such issues publicly is Art Swift, a vice president of business development at MIPS Technologies Inc., a chip-design company that supports Android. In a blog post last week, he wrote that Google is requiring hardware makers, chip makers and other partners to sign an antifragmentation agreement for early access to Android releases.
"We are in discussion with them about early access to the source code and we know that other players are as well," Mr. Swift said Thursday.
MIPS is pleased about Google's antifragmentation efforts, Mr. Swift said, and particularly Mr. Rubin's neutral stance toward chips. MIPS expects to compete with technology from ARM Holdings PLC, a leader in cellphone chips, as well as Intel Corp. in placing designs in mobile devices. "We see this as a net benefit to customers," he said.
