Recently I traveled by car from south Florida through south and central Louisiana, where most of the domestic sugar cane comes from. While I'm no expert on agriculture, it seems that there are very large open areas that are not really in any use.... could be that if demand shows up the potential for using sugar cane for energy could be quite big.
