It was labor intense. If that labor is supplied overseas, it costs less.

Since the 1930s there has been the added problems related to things like the tax stamp act, the controlled substance act etc. that made it even less likely to be grown by farmers here.

In WW2 shipments of hemp rope were at risk. This lead to the attempt to get crops growing here again. The effort was short lived.

We still have hemp rope available at any hardware store.
