The rumor is that the L2 cache will be removed from the SEC card - no change will be made to the Pentium II die itself - including its 32K Byte L1 cache.

As for transitioning to the Slot 1 architecture, this is probably the case.

If Intel can offer comparable performance, they will be able to command a premium in pricing vis-a-vis AMD and Cyrix competitive products - and still get a lot of business.

Just look at AMD's and Cyrix's financial statements - they are testaments to Intel's success.
