I feel sure that a presidential candidate has been thoroughly investigated by the FBI, including his birth documents. It may not be in the public domain, but I'm confident it gets done. As some on the thread have alluded to, it's a process one goes through to have top-secret clearance which a POTUS would have. It was probably done for the most part when he was elected Senator.
