When I first was exposed to Peak Oil, I didn't immediately understand the implications. It took about 2 or 3 months for me to fully understand the seriousness of the situation.

The first and strongest barrier to comprehending the situation is the total lack of discussion of Peak Oil either in government or the media. The natural reaction is, "Why isn't anyone else discussing this problem if it's so serious?"

After getting beyond the fact the media and the government weren't discussing Peak Oil, I operated under the delusion there are practical alternatives to conventional oil. I also believed technology would provide a solution or solutions.

It was only after researching potential substitutes for conventional oil and looking at technology like batteries that I realized none of these can provide an equivalent amount of energy the world consumes in oil today at anywhere near an affordable price.

Is the situation totally hopeless? No. But it will be if the world continues on as business as usual.
