My point, (which I think you agree with) is why have we spent decades sucking up Syria? They are a French client who think they own Lebanon. Our only concern should be vs Israel.

I have no idea. I could sort of see the point with Hafaz al Assad, who was a strong dictator who could have delivered a peace deal if he ever thought it was worth it to him (he never did). But it would always have been a hard sell to the Israelis - the Golan is really strategic, for the headwaters of the Jordan as much as the high ground. Why the policy kept going with Boy Assad, I have no idea.

As for Obama's policies, if you can call them that, every leftist "Orientalist" anti-American idiocy is being tried out and no surprise, they don't work in the real world. I'm not at all surprised the Twelvers in Iran think it is a harbinger of the End Times. It's more logical than the actual explanation.
