No doubt you are right about how to enter an order that rolls out a position, I just don't think about that as an option, I'm not sure why. I looked at my ETR 70 put in that light, since it will be assigned to me tomorrow, and see where I could close it out and sell a different strike/expiration to reduce the loss (currently around $270) but decided against it.

I suppose the reason is that I'm willing to own the stock and sell a 70 call against it, collecting the 5% dividend along the way if I end up owning it for a period of time. Not that much different financially, assuming this, that, and the other about the stock price.
