UPDATE 1-Elpida to report 30 pct rise in oper profit -Nikkei

Thu Apr 14, 2011 8:14pm EDT

(Adds details)

TOKYO, April 15 (Reuters) - Elpida Memory Inc is expected to report a 30 percent increase in its operating profit to about 35 billion yen ($419 million) for 2010/11 thanks to an increase in shipments of DRAM chips for mobile devices, the Nikkei business daily reported on Monday.

The company's sales probably rose 9 percent to about 510 billion yen, the report said.

Robust sales were helped by demand for DRAM chips for smartphones and tablet computers, while DRAM sales for personal computers slowed because of falling prices, the newspaper said.

Elpida probably suffered a loss of just under a 100 million yen by closing a plant in Akita prefecture for a day and a half in the wake of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

Elpida later issued a statement saying the figure was not announced by the company and that it plans to announce its earnings on May 12. ($1 = 83.510 Japanese Yen) (Reporting by Junko Fujita; Editing by Edwina Gibbs
