SHENANDOAH ALGAE PLANT UNVEILED FRIDAY
(Shenandoah) -- U-S Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and other dignitaries gather in Shenandoah Friday for an event three years in the making.
BioProcess Algae formally unveils its algae bioreactor project at Shenandoah's Green Plains Renewable Energy Plant at 4:30 p.m.. Gregg Connell is executive vice president of the Shenandoah Chamber and Industry Association. Connell tells KMA News Iowa's former governor is just one of the ceremony's speakers. Others include Tim Burns, CEO of BioProcess Algae, Todd Becker, CEO of Green Plains Renewable Energy, and Mary Rosenthal, executive director of Algae Biomass Organization.
Connell says the project is designed to produce algae from 148,000 tons of pure CO2 emitted from Green Plain's ethanol plant next door.
"We have some incredible partners that moved this project forward to this date," says Connell.
Supporters hope the algae produced from the plant can fill the demand for not only biofuels in the country, but animal feeds and pharmaceuticals, as well.
"Using waste products from the ethanol plant--the CO2--plus wastewater and sunlight, we're able to grow incredible amounts of algae," Connell says.
The public is encouraged to park at the Eaton's west parking lot. Shuttle buses will run spectators to Green Plains' ethanol plant between 3-to-4 p.m. Connell hopes for a good turnout. He says the unveiling will be the public's only chance to see the bioreactors up close. Connell says weather won't be a factor in the unveiling. All activities will take place under a giant tent outside the ethanol plant, with a hard-surface floor, video screens and displays outlining the algae plant.
Following the algae plant's unveiling, Vilsack will serve as keynote speaker at the Shenandoah Chamber and Industry Association's annual dinner Friday evening at the American Legion Country Club.
