... wouldn't it be more sensible to hire some minimum-wage college kids to sit there...

This might work if the college kids were female cheer leaders about age 19 and 36-24-36. <g>

Seriously, american workers have worked the "graveyard shift" since time ever. It is not rocket science to stay awake.

This is about personal accountability, facility and division management. They have failed. It's really that simple.

The union wants more membership ergo hire more people to baby sit the guy working the midshift.

For years, the FAA controller union has tried to get some of the benies that the European controllers enjoy. This is one of two reasons why they are defending the behavior of these sleeping controllers.

DOT Secretary LaHood is screwing this up exactly like I would expect a liberal union lover to do. Money is no object when it comes to safety, he declared. We will add staff to the midshift. So what the second person on shift will do is sleep the first half and the other will sleep the second half. Problem solved.

What he didn't say is that job performance is the most critical element of the air traffic controller, the operational supervisor and manager.

Job performance includes the requirement to be alert, i.e staying awake.
