This pretty much describes things.

I don't know if you remember the K5 - announced with much fanfare in 1992/1993.

When it (K5) finally came out in late 1994, it was slower than molasses in January.

Six months later, AMD had to publicly admit it. In October of that year (1995) AMD had to go outside to BUY NEXGEN for $600,000,000 to get a viable x86 design which became the K6.

Looks like the circle has turned, one more time.
