Sometimes one can win by losing. If Obama had stood his ground and the Republicans refused to extend unemployment benefits in the middle of a recession... well... it would have clipped the right wing just as Newt Gingrich's government shutdown effectively cancelled his Contract With America. He did that because he didn't have the votes to get the unemployment extension through Congress
