TJ, contrary to your assertion at the end oil is the result of organic matter which was generated over time from the carbon and water available on earth plus the input of solar energy. Same for coal.

As strange as it sounds over time there where HUGE amounts of biomass if from trees or plants or animals that sank into the oceans and generated methane hydrates upon decomposition.

Just take a closer look at N. Siberia - drill a hole in the ground and methane will permeate into the atmosphere, not to mention their bogs
